What are the health benefits of Turmeric?

Curcumin is the main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a very strong antioxidant.

  • Curcumin is strongly anti-inflammatory, helping to combat low-level chronic inflammation a symptom of most diseases.
  • Curcumin is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals due to its chemical structure. In addition, curcumin boosts the activity of your body’s own antioxidant enzymes. Thus, curcumin delivers an antioxidant one-two punch against free radicals. It blocks them directly, then stimulates your body’s own antioxidant defenses.

In a number of studies, Curcumin was shown to be an effective anti-depressant, leading to emotional balance and well-being.  This is essential to manage stress in modern life.

Curcumin has been used extensively in ayurvedic medicine for centuries.  It is nontoxic and has a number of therapeutic benefits, including as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (mentioned above), as well as analgesic, antiseptic, and anticarcinogenic properties.

More extensive information on the beneficial properties of Turmeric can be found in this published journal article. M. Nagpal and S. Sood, “Role of Curcumin in Systemic and Oral Health: An Overview,” Journal of Natural Science, Biology, and Medicine, vol. 4, no. 1, pp. 3 – 7, 2013.
